Methods of Teaching English as Second Language in China

Are you a newly appointed teacher in China? Are you preparing to go to China? If yes, do you have any idea how you are going to teach them English in China? You need to have a clear idea of what you teach and how.

Jobsfor Americans in China are quite common now. This is because Americans learn English right from their birth, that is, it is their mother tongue. Hence, they are naturally fluent in English. Also American English is a lot easier than English of England. Well, if you are a beginner then you should follow the following steps that will help you grip a root when you are in China.

Direct method

The direct method focuses on the particular language or it can be a subject that the student wants to learn. It mainly tries to improve the oral skill of the student by drilling him or her repetitively and making them provide oral presentations.

 Grammar translation

This method gives emphasis on the English grammar and translation. You can already feel that this one is the way probably you have also learned the language. This method gives a deeper learning into the technicality of the English language or any other language.

Audio-lingual

In this method a negative response is given with a negative feedback (here bad use of English) and a positive response is rewarded.  This method is also called the Army method or the New Key method.

Structural approach

This includes the learning in a logical way. English or here any language to be precise is just a combination of complex sentences. These sentences are generally arranged based on some specific rules and they are needed to be learned by the students. For example, the teacher should teach the use of “to be” verb before going into the present continuous form which uses the auxiliary form of “to be “verb.

Task-based learning

The aim of this kind of approach is to complete tasks. Interesting and relevant exercises are given to the students to practice. The students will make use of their previous knowledge of English and try to make lesser errors as possible in the tasks.

So, if you have been selected for one of the TEFL jobs in China, be sure to keep in mind these methods of teaching which will help you to excel. You can also try any other methods which you find relevant.
